Backup

The Backup function of Helium Music Manager gives you the ability to safely backup all your settings (including all templates) and the database where all references to your music are stored.

How to backup your databases, options and templates

  1. Click on File > Backup... from the main menu.
  2. Click the Browse button to set a destination folder for your backup files (a new folder will be created that will contain your backup file).
  3. Optionally select the contents you would like to backup by selecting the Advanced tab. The following contents can be selected:
    1. User defined options
    2. Access databases
    3. System database
    4. Auto-correction options
    5. Templates
    6. Microsoft SQL Server Database (only shown if you are currently using this type of database).
    7. MySQL Database (only shown if you are currently using this type of database).
  4. Click OK and Helium Music Manager will save all personal files you have created (templates, settings and the database) to a compressed zip file in a sub folder under the folder you selected in Step 2.
  5. When the backup has been successfully, a message will be displayed stating Backup created OK. It will confirm the name and location of the backup file.
  6. Click OK.

Note:

  • We strongly recommend that you frequently backup your data  in order to prevent the potential loss of your database and settings that could occur in the event of a computer crash or an unforeseen incident that corrupts your data.
  • Always backup your settings before installing a new version of Helium Music Manager, in order to prevent the settings from being overwritten by the installer.
  • When backing up a Microsoft SQL Server database, you may need to specify the native SQL Server backup folder. This is generally pre-filled.
  • When backing up a MySQL database, you may need to specify the MySQL bin directory. This is generally pre-filled.

Backing up a Microsoft SQL database

Backing up a Microsoft SQL database is a bit special, since it's done in two major steps:

  1. Invoking SQL Servers native backup command

  2. Moving the resulting backup file to Helium Music Managers backup structure

One important thing about backing up a Microsoft SQL database is that a "native" backup folder must be set. Generally such a folder is created when MS SQL Server is installed. This folder is often located in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Backup".

Helium Music Manager will automatically try to locate this folder, and set it as active by default. This folder is used in BOTH a backup and a restore operation by MS SQL Server. If the folder is not present/located you will need to select a valid backup folder by yourself.

The important thing when you need to select this folder manually is that the MS SQL Server Windows user (e.g. "SQLServer2005MSSQLUser") must have full control to this folder. Please see your MS SQL server documentation for more details.
