The File Rename Wizard

Introduction to the File Rename Wizard

The File Rename Wizard helps you to rename your files using templates so you can quick and easy rename them into the format you desire. You can create additional folder structures using the included templates or by creating your own. The File Rename Wizard will use information contained in your tags to create new filenames and/or folders.

Using the File Rename Wizard

  1. Browse for some files from the track list and select the ones that you want to rename.

  2. Start the File Rename Wizard using any of the below methods:

    • Click on Tools | Rename Files from the main menu.

    • Click on Tools | Rename Files from the main toolbar.

    • Right click one of the selected files in the track list and select the Tools | Rename Files menu option.

    • Press CTRL-R on your keyboard.

    • Click the button on the main toolbar.

  3. If you want to create folders, click the Add Folder button and read the Edit File/Folder Settings section below. Repeat the steps in the Edit File/Folder Settings section for each folder you want to create.

  4. Select Rename files in the Rename Settings to the right to only rename files (and prevent foldes to be created even if the template includes folders).

Select Rename and move files into folders to rename your files and move them into the folders in the current template.

Select Rename and copy files into folders to rename your files and copy them into the folders in the current template.

  5. Click the Browse button to browse for a destination folder where you want to move or copy your files to. If you do not select a destination folder while using folders in your template, the new folders will be created in the folder where the files currently are.

  6. Click the Save button if you want to save your template.

  7. Click the Next button to show a preview of how the files will be renamed. Please read the Previewing, adjusting and performing the rename operation section below to understand how this step works.

Previewing, adjusting and performing the rename operation

Depending on if your template included folder or not, the previewing step will look slightly different. You can switch between File and Folder Preview using the tabs at the top of the dialog.

Previewing without folders

The Preview step shows the selected files in two rows; the first shows how the new filename will look after the operation (text shown in solid black). The second row shows the original filename so you will be able to compare the filenames before performing the renaming operation. Path will also be shown in the Filename column if you have chosen to rename and move or rename and copy files into folders on the previous step.

You can modify the new filename in the list by selecting it and pressing the F2 key on your keyboard.

Each file entry has an additional Action showing what will happen to the file when performing the renaming operation. The options are Rename and Leave and does just what they say. Click on a file in the list and change the action in the lower left corner of the dialog. You can also double click on a file in the list to change the action. Additionally select an action and click the Apply to All button to apply this action to all files in the list.

Previewing with folders

When there are folders to be created in your template, the Folder Preview will be shown. This preview will get a good overview of how the resulting folders will be created and how the filenames will be.

Performing the Rename operation

Click the Finish button to perform the renaming operation. A progress will be shown, telling what action that is currently in process.
