How to connect your iPod and iPhone device

Helium Music Manager enables you to synchronize and manage your iPod/iPhone devices.

To be able to connect to to your iPod/iPhone device you must have Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 installed.

Preparing your iPod or iPhone device to work with Helium Music Manager

To prepare your iPod device for Helium Music Manager, perform the following steps:

  1. Close Helium Music Manager.
  2. Connect your iPod/iPhone device.
  3. Start iTunes.
    Note: The following instructions assume that you are running iTunes 9.0.2.25.
  4. Click on menu item 'Edit | Preferences...'

  5. Click on the Devices tab and tick 'Prevent iPods and iPhones from syncing automatically' and then click OK.

  6. Click on each of your iPod/iPhone devices in the iTunes tree:

  7. For each iPod device, make sure that 'Open iTunes when this iPod is attached' is not ticked and that 'Enable disk use' is ticked on the 'Summary' tab.


  8. For each iPhone device, make sure that 'Automatically sync when the iPhone is connected' is not ticked on the 'Summary' tab (it may already be greyed out).


  9. For both iPods and iPhones, make sure that 'Sync Music' on the Music tab is not ticked. Note that the tab appears in a different position for the iPod and Iphone.

  10. Finally click 'Apply' for each device to save your changes
  11. Close iTunes and start Helium Music Manager.

Using your iPod/iPhone device with Helium Music Manager

You can work with your iPod device in various ways within Helium Music Manager. A few examples are:

  • Use the Device Synchronization tool to perform automatic synchronization of your device
  • Use the iPod Devices browser in the Music Explorer to browse your device, adding files to and from it, creating playlists and much more!

Using your iPod/iPhone on Windows Vista / Windows 7

The first time you use your iPod/iPhone device on Windows Vista / Windows 7 with User Access Control (UAC) active, you must run Helium Music Manager as an administrator (right click the shortcut and select Run As Administrator).

As soon as Helium Music Manager has successfully connected to the device (i.e. it is shown under the iPod Devices entry in the Music Explorer) you can close Helium Music Manager and start it normally. This needs to be done once for each new iPod/iPhone device that you wish to use with Helium Music Manager.

Supported iPod and iPhone devices

  • All iPod devices (Shuffle, Mini, 3G, 4G (Photo), 5G (Video), 6G (Classic, Nano), iPhone/iTouch) are supported.
  • Firmwares up to 3.x are currently supported.
