Installing Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express
This guide is aimed at those who want to install and use Microsoft SQL Server Express as database backend to Helium Music Manager.
Microsoft SQL Server Express generally gives much better performance when having large collections. This is also the way to go if you plan on using Helium Music Manager in a multi-user environment where two or more clients want to access the same music collection.
Installing
Please follow the instructions below to install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express. If you will use Helium Music Manager in a multi-user environment this only needs to be done on the server (the computer where the music and the database resides).
- Visit the following web page as Microsoft.com:
http://www.microsoft.com/express/sql/download
- Click the Install It Now! button to install using the Microsoft Web Platform.
- If the Microsoft Web Platform is not previously installed, just click the green Get the Microsoft Web Platform button. When a download dialog shows, asking if you want to run or save the wpilauncher_n.exe, click Run. If you get a security warning, make sure that the Publisher is Microsoft and then click Run.
- The installation is very straightforward and will sometimes ask you about installing required components. Always say Yes to this.
Required components that will be automatically installed (if they aren't already) are:
- Windows Installer
- .NET 2.0 Framework
- .NET 3.5 Framework
- After having installed some components you may be asked to reboot your computer. Always say Yes to this.
- After having rebooted your computer the Web Platform Installer may tell you that the installation failed but this information can safely be ignored as the installation will continue.
- When asked by the installer, select Windows Integrated Authentication and click Continue.
- When the installation is finished, click Close.
Congratulations! You are now ready to configure Helium Music Manager to use SQL Server Express.
