Thanks for the update Mikael, hopefully the negotiations will progress in the new year, however if they are not prepared to change their stance I'm sure I would not be alone in thinking that if the only way we can restore the CDDB support is the pay an annual licence fee then I would be willing to sign up.

Have a wonderful Christmas and good luck with the Gracenote negotiations.

I agree: I would rather pay a small fee than let this drag on through 2009 without CDDB support.

Count me in too, Mikael. I would be very happy to pay the extra annual fee to have CDDB back. I don't know the terms of the contract they proposed to you but maybe you could offer the plug-in as an option so only the people who want it would have to pay for it. Just a thought...

Well, as long as there is no Gracenote support in Helium, what alternatives are there outside except iTunes?
Anyone using another software with success?

Helium Music Manager 2009 already ships with an alternative - a new FreeDB Plugin. In addition the new Amazon and Discogs plug-ins are able to fill a tracklist. I use FreeDB with good results. I just wonder if there are specific cases where FreeDB doesn't work and CDDB does?

Yes, especially occuring with new or less popular albums...

I agree - The success rate of Gracenote is far superior to that provided by FreeDB, this was the primary reason for my switch to Helium :(

CDDB has more information fields and I find it mostly to be more exact and complete, I have compared this when tagging on a regular basis and I'd say that I have chosen CDDB before freeDB in more than 90% of the cases.

Amazon works for current popular albums but the interface realy doesn't work for me and the information I get I normally already have in the form of the filename.

The Discogs plugin just doesn't work, I use discogs a lot to get information about songs and albums but I rarely get correct hits on albums using the plugin, and this is normally albums I know exist in the discogs database.

First we lost amg plugin, now cddb.

Guess discogs and others will follow soon?

    Re: CDDB Support for 2009

Probably not since they are not pay-sites. The other plug-ins are using open technologies which goals are not to earn money on their users as AMG and CDDB.
This is also a reason why we released the source code to these plug-ins to let them evolve and be improved by anyone which has ideas of how they can be improved or find other sites which can be of interest.
A few new plug-ins will appear already in the next build and new usefull features are under construction.

    Re: CDDB Support for 2009

Is there any update on CDDB support?

Michael - You are the one dealing with Gracenote....what is the probability that Helium will support CDDB/Gracenote moving forward? Are the contract terms/pricing that Gracenote is proposing feasible? Have they shown willingness to negotiate?

Do they license CDDB on a flat fee or per user basis? As I've said before, I would be willing to pay an additional fee to be able to utilize CDDB.

    Thanks
