How to stop HMM from adding folders to Auto-Update

Is there a way to stop HMM from automatically adding folders to the Auto-Update folder list?

I and I am sure many other start out with my files in a temporary folder while editing and correcting tags. After which I use the auto-rename tool to rename and move my files to their final location.

HMM constantly adds these temporary folders to the Auto-Update list and it's a pain to have to constantly go in and clean them out all the time. Most of the time these folders do not even exist anymore.

I have never use the Auto-update feature because of this. I am concerned that it might decide to add some folder in there that I absolutely do not want to "automatically" add files from.

We really need a way to tell it to use only the folders we want it to and not to add any other folders under any circumstances unless we have told it to.

    Thank you.

Adding a new folder to the library will add it to the "Automatic update" list and select it for being searched for new files. You can easily go into Options under the Update library section and deselect that folder in the list. This will prevent this folder from being searched for new files in the future.

    Does this solve your problem?

Not really. It is a pain in the neck to have to constantly housekeep all these useless folder listings that no longer exist. There should at least be a way to tell HMM to delete the folders from this list if it no longer exists? or a way to at least remove them in bulk. I just don't like seeing them there for no reason. Having all those folders listed (If I don't going into HMM and clean these out regularly it can be hundreds) must have some effect on the overall performance of the program?

Please make it either not add them in the first place or if it must then delete them when they no longer exist. There are only two folders (With their sub folders) that I would ever want HMM to monitor and until I can be sure that only those two folders will be in there then I will never turn this feature on for fear that it will add crap that I don't want it to add to my database. I don't want it to monitor "working Folders" where my music goes temporarily while I am updating and checking tags.

btw sorry for the long delay in responding. I must have forgot to set up monitoring for this thread. rest assured that I will turn it on now.

HMM tries to be smart when it comes to maintaining folders to scan for updates, but depending on how you have initially added music to your library, obsolete folders may still exist in the library.

Although a bit hidden, there are options to remove these folders manually.

    Please follow these steps:
    1. In the Music Explorer, expand the Collection/volume node (you may have to turn this node on if it isn't visible). Expand down to the My music volume entry (if you have renamed it it might be named something else).
    2. Right click the My music volume and select Properties.
    3. Look through the Volume root paths list. Obsolete folders (where there are no longer files in the library) will be shown with regular black color, whereas folders where there are files in the library will show as grey (these cannot be removed without first removing the files from the library).
    4. Select the paths you want to remove and click the Remove button to wipe them from your library.
    Hope this helps.

Hi Fredrik and thank you for your reply. I am aware of this method of removing these redundant folder. However you can only highlight / remove one folder at a time so if doing a lot of work on the database etc... it is quite tedious to perform this action for folders which never should have been added in the first place.

Maybe if I explained how I manage my music.
The final location of my music is on a NAS Server. However I do not want to perform the operations such as Analyzing audio files, adding cover art, checking and updating tags to my new files while they are on the NAS because it is unbearably slow. when I first rip a CD I rip it to a local temporary folder. I perform the above operations and finally I use the rename / move option to get the files on the final locations on the NAS server. So you can see that all these initial temporary folder get added to and remain in the auto-update paths even though they only exist for a very short time after which they are deleted.

If HMM must have the temporary folders for some reason to keep database integrity or something can't you at least arrange it so that they get deleted automatically when the files get moved to their new location?

We will review if an optional automated housekeeping function for this can be implemented for an upcoming release.
    Thanks for the input!

Thank you. Any program that has automatic updating should only be "Automatically Updated" from specifically chosen locations.

    Hey Carl,
I saw your issued and had to respond with my solution. I rip CDs locally as well, but to one common directory. That way, since the rip folder is only a temporary placeholder, I don't accumulate all the garbage folders when I transfer the files to their final location.
    I hope that helps!

Thanks for the suggestion. I also Rip to a common local folder. But I generally rip multiple albums and then organize and verify tags afterwards so I still end up with all these useless no longer existing sub-folders in there.

As long as you add tags during ripping that include base info (i.e., album artist, album, title, etc), you can rip to one basic folder (without sub-folders). You can then parse them out to sub-folders when you save them to their final destination.
I am like you, I hate housekeeping useless data. With a little creativity during the process, we can overcome any perceived limitations. I'd rather save my bug fixes and feature requests for those problems that I cannot overcome...

I do put most of my fields in during ripping. Unfortunately not all of the fields are available during ripping. The point is that the design serves no purpose and in fact defeats the purpose of having certain folders maintained automatically.
